When I first got my Dslr I did not shoot in manual mode. Like most, I was to impatient to learn the ins and outs of my camera. It took me three years to realize my images could looks so much better. I did lots of research and found lots of advice how to do so. Now that I have learned how to use manual mode, I haven’t looked backed.
Here’s why I love shooting in manual:
The oh so lovely bokeh background. In manual mode you can control how blurry you back ground is. I love a nice creamy blurry background. It makes your subjects pop and looks more professional in my opinion.
Choosing a focal point. being able to change the focal point was a game changer for me. I had no idea you could do it on a camera.
Controlling light. Being able to properly expose a photo has improved my pictures significantly. The more you practice the more you can bend the rules to get the image you want. Whether it be dark and moody or bright and cheery.
No more flash! when shooting in auto the flash always seemed to pop up randomly. I always ended up turning it off, but wouldn’t get the picture I want. Some have learned to use flash in manual mode, I still prefer natural light.
I hope you have fun learning manual mode. It’s not something you learn over night. Keep practicing and the ah ha moment will happen! I promise. And as always in photography, there is always something to learn. I need to work on white balance and editing.
